Lovely Decay: A Poem

I met her near the strike of Halloween.

Her laughter, soft as a cloud.

I could find her in a crowd.

Little did I know that she would be my queen.

Through night and day, we talked with no end.

All the time, I would spend.

She was a shining light.

She could light up my darkest night.

She would return every smile I had.

She would stop me from being so sad.

But I can’t tell her my feelings.

I don’t even know what her appeal is.

I feel embarrassed telling her.

What if she doesn’t like me?

Oh, I just want to be free.

And still, be fine if she declines what I think we are.

In stolen glances and half-spoken lines.

I’d catch her gaze, pretend I was fine.

Afraid to speak, to let it show.

The feelings I hoped she’d somehow know.

Near winter’s strike, I’d dropped the guise.

Confessed in whispers and hopeful sighs.

She laughed, surprised, then took my hand.

Two souls bound like sea and sand.

Late nights and early mornings, we chased as one.

Under bountiful stars and the morning sun.

We shared our dreams, our fears, and plans.

I was hers, and she was mine to stand.

In the halfway of winter, our words were undone.

We said forever, only leaving it in a memory.

She turned away, our hands let go.

And left me lost in a quiet woe.

I lingered long in the memory’s glow.

Ashamed of the love I’d failed to show.

But as time moved on, He mended scars.

And I found my strength beneath bright stars.

Now seasons shift and life feels right.

With peace by day and calm by night.

Though love was lost, the lessons stay.

And I’ve found my voice and friends along the way.

At long last, He made it better.

I finally don’t feel deader.

He lifts His arms in a warm embrace.

As I finally am at the right place.
